Gaining control of your life isn’t something a lot of people know how to do. Most of us walk around in this world feeling helpless to circumstances that just seem to pile up on us and take away everything we really care about. Think about it. How many times have you really wanted something and in the end it just didn’t work out? You may have tried and tried but no matter what you did it just didn’t come to pass.
Is it Life is it God or is it You?
I used to think life just wasn’t fair. There are a lot of folks out there who would agree with me. It was just the system I thought, just how things are. The way things were set up in the world was what prevented me from succeeding.
At times I blamed it on God. I thought he was mad at me or maybe He even hated me. My Father never really liked me so why would God have any use for me? What I didn’t realize was the way I was choosing to live my life prevented God from acting on my behalf.
So It Was Me?
It turns out the old saying, “you get what you wish for” is true. When you expect your life to go to hell in a handbasket that’s what it will do. I didn’t know my thoughts were the key to a good life or a bad one. I didn’t know There was a way of Gaining control of my life. But there is!
7 Steps You Can Use To Change Your Life
You can have a good life. You’re not at the mercy of the cosmos as some would have you believe but you must learn some dos and don’ts in order to take control. These seven steps may seem a bit weird but I promise if you do you will see change for the better.
1. Give Your Life To God
So here’s the most important step you can take. I’m not just talking to non-Christians here. There are a whole bunch of churchgoers out there who haven’t surrendered their life to Christ.
I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full. (John 15:5-11)
Jesus told us many times and in many ways, if you follow him and do what he says you will enter the Kingdom of God. Believe me. When you enter the Kingdom of God Life gets beautiful no matter what circumstances try to throw at you.
Think about what you think about
Now you have decided to follow God and that’s the cool part but here is where the rubber starts to meet the road. The next thing you need to do is to begin to get control of your thought process.
Your mind is like a computer so it’s important to program it correctly in order to obtain the right result. If you allow yourself to dwell and meditate on negative thoughts you will become a negative person.
If you fill your mind with positive thoughts and always look for the good in life you will become a positive person. It’s just that simple.
For as he thinks in his heart so is he (Proverbs 23:7)
Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying a person plagued with negative thoughts is a bad person. This is not about what kind of person you are. It’s about what kind of life you want to live in.
When you find yourself thinking negatively, stop and say to yourself, “this is not my thought”, and chose something positive to replace it. It won’t be easy but the effort you put into it will pay off and your reward will be a life worth living.
Gaining Control of a Mind That Wanders
Have you ever been listening to someone talk to you and suddenly realize you have no idea what they had been saying? Do you ever find that when you’re reading a book you sometimes realize you don’t know what you just read? How about driving down a road and realizing you don’t remember the last few miles?
These are symptoms of a wandering mind and can be really annoying to those around you not to mention cause you to be unproductive in your work, study and hazardous to driving.
Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong. (Ecclesiastes 5:1)
This is a difficult fix but you simply need to train your mind to focus on what you’re doing and stay in the moment. It might seem like you will never make it but if you persevere you will find dramatic improvement.
Doubt and Unbelief
Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. (Mark 11:23)
Belief is a really strong force in the spiritual realm. The bible says that without faith it is impossible to please God. (Hebrews 6:11) When I say doubt and unbelief it sounds like I’m talking about a lack of belief but the truth is there is no such thing as unbelief. No matter what, you believe something. You can believe good things or bad things.
If you believe good things (Faith) Good things can and will come to you, but if you doubt good things will happen (Which is believing they won’t) that’s what will most likely occur.
If you’re serious about gaining control of your life once again you need to monitor your thought process. Avoid saying things like I wonder and instead say things like I believe. When you wonder you are giving control to the cosmos (or worse). God wants you to believe for what you want in your life and when you do good things can happen.
Renew Your Mind
that in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. (Ephesians 22-24)
The steps I’ve been describing are all apart of renewing your mind and gaining control of your life completely depends on it. The next step is to study the word of God.
I don’t mean just read it. You need to study it. Whatever you need help with, look it up in a concordance and read all the scripture about that. I suggest writing down the scriptures that resonate heavily with you.
In this way, you’ll get the word into your mind and into your heart. I can’t fully relate to you the power you will gain in your life when you can speak the word of God over any situation. It will change your life.
Okay, you’ve given your life to God. You’re thinking about what you’re thinking about, and not letting your mind wander all over the place. Faith and belief are your way of life, you’re renewing your mind and reading the word of God. One more very important thing to discuss in gaining control.
Watch What You Say
With the fruit of a man’s mouth, his stomach will be satisfied; he will be satisfied with the product of his lips. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit. (Proverbs 18:20)
I can’t stress this enough. The words you speak are extremely powerful. God created the Heavens and the Earth by speaking words. Isaiah 55:11 says, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
I know what you may be thinking, Yeah yeah, but these are the words of God.
My words are not powerful. Here’s the thing. When God created us he created us in his image. What that means is that he is spirit and so are we. Yes, our words are not as powerful but they are powerful and will change your life for the good or the bad.
Think about it. when a mother says to a child repeatedly, “Johnny You’ll never amount to anything. What happens to Johnny. He has been cursed by his own mom.
When you say you are getting sick you usually do, but what if you instead said I am believing for wellness in Jesus’s name. In all areas of your life always speak about what you want to happen and never about what you don’t, because when you do you’re giving the devil a foothold in your life.
Always speak well of yourself and others because you are so much more powerful than you may know. God loves you and wants the best for you so assist him by not working against him. He is a gentleman and if you choose death by speaking negative words he will let you have your way.
If however, you choose life-giving words to speak, the Lord is ready to dispatch his angels to assist you in gaining complete control of a wonderful life in Christ.
